Whilst at Queens University my father joined The Queens University Officer Training Corps where he made friends with a law student named Robert Blair Mayne from nearby Newtownards later to become Lt Colonel Robert Blair Mayne - DSO 2 Bars, Croix de Guerre, Legion d`Honneur, Sportsman, Freemason and a founding member of British Special Air Services.
Although my own father Dr Frank died aged 37 Oct 1952 of malignant hypertension - high blood pressure to you and me - before I was born and Col Robert died 3yrs later, over the years I was privy to many little stories that where held within the family, - of visits he had made to 15 Southwell Road or Stella Maris (Star of the Sea) as it was then called. - and would be discussed from time to time not least when the great wars would be mentioned or when the famous war movies of the 50`s – 60` would come on the TV that required a hero to face down some great injustice.
Stella Maris also helped out during Bangor bombing in early 70`s when and as a precaution, residents of nearby King St had to leave their homes - my mother invited them in for a cup of tea for an hour or so. Some of the folks remarked that it was like old times when as patients of my father they sat in the same sitting room that was then his waiting room 20 years earlier.
During the Hungarian revolution in 1956, refugees from hungry stayed in Bangor. They were sleeping in what was the Elim Church on Southwell Road and in the morning I would see the families pass my house to go for breakfast into the Crofton Hotel on the Queens Parade. It was summer I believe and as a child of barely 3 years I have fond memories of meeting some of the children and each morning I would climb up on the settee to wave to them as they went by with their parents.
I had hoped to include photos and captions of Bangor’s Street parties during celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II Coronation 1953. Unfortunately I loaned this special edition 1953 of the Co. Down (Bangor spectator) spectator to Bangor spectator in 2002. I never got this paper back again.
